What’s the Story?

Immerse yourself in the pulsating, neon-drenched streets of Hong Kong, where the atmosphere evokes the cinematic worlds of Blade Runner, Ghost in the Shell, and Wong Kar Wai’s dreamy, melancholic films. As night falls, the city transforms into a neo-noir spectacle, with vibrant signs casting electric hues over bustling crowds and shadowy alleys. Capture the fleeting beauty of urban life, where human stories unfold against a backdrop of glowing lights and gritty urban textures, creating images that feel like stills from a cinematic masterpiece.

What We’ll Shoot

On this street photography workshop, we’ll chase candid moments that embody Hong Kong’s nocturnal energy. You’ll learn to harness neon lights and reflections to craft neo-noir compositions, using techniques like high-contrast lighting, silhouettes, and selective focus to evoke mood and narrative. Color and light will be your paintbrush. We’ll experiment with slow shutter speeds to capture motion blur of passing crowds and traffic, and practice framing techniques to create layered, cinematic images inspired by Wong Kar Wai’s evocative storytelling. Train your eyes to capture fleeting moments that define Hong Kong’s nightlife!

Where We’ll Explore

We start in Central A, where Hong Kong’s main thoroughfare hums with commuters rushing home after a long day’s work amid towering concrete skyscrapers shimmering with light. As evening falls, we’ll slip into the lively restaurant and entertainment district, capturing the glow of neon signs and locals unwinding in bustling eateries. If time allows, we’ll finish our walk Causeway Bay, or Tsim Sha Tsui, shopping districts where the streets, pulse with nostalgic charm mixed with modern architecture.

I recently did the Ghosts of Hong Kong tour with Tom Bugatti. I’m no slouch when it comes to street photography in my home town of Hong Kong, (I’ve been doing it for over 15 years), but Tom taught me a refreshingly new and different approach to composing a frame. I’ll certainly be using his inspiration next time I’m out shooting the streets.
