What’s the Story?

On a hillside on the outskirts of Kyoto, you step over the threshold of the Moon Heart Temple. As you pass the moss-laden stone and stoop beneath its ancient gate you enter a fairy tale, 900 years in the making. Once inside the modern world fades away and you are seemingly transported into the past, where you will meet a descendant of an ancient samurai clan—a woman who has sought to honor her family’s legacy through the preservation their heirlooms and customs.

What We’ll Shoot

You will meet and get to know Junko Sophie Okimoto, a living descendant of an old and venerated samurai clan of Kyoto. Junko has inherited a large collection of priceless kimonos from her two grandmothers. We will photograph her while she dons these veritable works of art in the serene environs of Geshinji Temple. You will be coached by a professional photographer on composition, working with natural light, and directing your lovely subject.

Where We’ll Explore

In the role of caretaker, Junko has taken up residence Geshinji Temple (also known as ‘Moon Heart Temple’) on the outskirts of Kyoto. Tucked onto a hillside, the temple features a garden built by the famed artist Sōami, who is known for designing the garden at the Silver Pavilion, also in Kyoto. The grounds of the temple feature and ancient harmony and serenity that make for a splendid backdrop for the elegant Junko.
