What’s the Story?
Venture with us into the forgotten streets of Osaka. In this photography workshop we explore working class neighborhoods where life unfolds without pretense. Narrow alleys, aging shopfronts, defunct vending machines, and the weary citizens of these lost streets—all await our cameras’ gaze. As economic progress unfolds at a breakneck speed throughout the city, these enclaves are windows into a bygone era. But they are not frozen in time—with the passing years these authentic neighborhoods are slowly being paved over in the name of progress. This photography workshop focuses on documenting these ephemeral places that will soon be lost to the passage of time.
What We’ll Shoot
In this photo workshop we’ll focus on candid street moments as well as capturing the overall atmosphere of the places we will explore. You will learn how to work the scene in tight spaces and work up close with the denizens of authentic neighborhoods. We’ll explore how to frame textures, signage, and small details that speak to the untold history of daily life. For human subjects, you’ll be guided on capturing natural, respectful candid images while building the confidence to photograph in environments that feel real and unscripted. The aim is to create images that preserve atmosphere as much as appearance.
Where We’ll Explore
Our walk begins in Tsuruhashi, a neighborhood known for its sprawling market filled with fresh raw seafood vendors, butcher shops, produce sellers, and sundries of all types. The area is inhabited by people of Korean descent whose families have settled in Japan generations ago. This gives Tsuruhashi a truly unique character. Our next stop is Nishinari, where we’ll explore aging shopping arcades, retro storefronts, and streets that carry decades of history in their walls. The people here are hardened by years of economic disparity and a declining population. This is an Osaka far removed from the glitz of the tourist avenues of Dotonbori.
